A hiking treat waiting to be had, the Caballo Mountains are located in the small town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico! Located along the North Ridge, maps will refer to this particular area as Caballo Cone. However, the locals will refer to this mountain, and subsequent hike, as Turtleback Mountain, which is the most prominent point along the North Ridge. Timber Mountain is the highest point along the South Ridge. Climbing a distance of approximately 1800 feet, it’s roughly 2.5 miles from the Caballo Cone Trailhead to the peak of Turtleback Mountain (so roundtrip about 5.0 miles), with many false summits! As always, hike with a buddy, let someone know where you all are going, take plenty of water and food and be prepared for varying weather conditions. Class 2 hike.
